Clozaril and Serdolect for Schizophrenia? Augmenting Clozapine With Sertindole- SERCLOZ

The high price of Clozaril(Clozapine) use is with the physical body. The drug is one that is typically used as "last resort" med for schizophrenia, and the side effects can be deadly. The mandatory blood draws are for a CBC to check white blood cell count, to make sure the patient has not developed a drug-induced leukemia.

My daughter takes this drug. There is a clinical trial that is
recruiting patients in Denmark for Serdolect. The goal is to see if less Clozaril is needed if augmented with Serdolect.Serdolect (Sertindole)is already approved for use in Europe, and the company has recently applied for FDA approval for use in the U.S.

One interesting thing to note, is that one of the psychiatric hospitals (Aalborg Psychiatric Hospital) doing the study is the drug company that applied for the U.S. approval.

Less of one drug but adding another could be efficacious, but often it just creates more complexity teasing apart side effects or reactions.

ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT00345982

The study recruits non-healthy volunteers, is based in a psychiatric hospital and funded by the company that sells the drug. That doesn't sit right with me, and makes me wonder if the patients (volunteers) know they are in a trial at all. You'd be surprised how many rights of patients are violated in psych wards(witnessed it myself) with regard to medications. My daughter, a legal adult, though only 18 was drugged up on so many drugs in psych wards, and she had no idea they were changing meds around. She was also unable to communicate. Just a thought.

Serdolect for Schizophrenia.

"Lundbeck Submits New Drug Application (NDA) for Serdolect in the US for the Treatment of Schizophrenia

COPENHAGEN, Denmark, Sept. 15, 2008-H. Lundbeck A/S announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has completed the initial check for completeness and accepted the New Drug Application on Serdolect for the treatment of schizophrenia for review. This is the first NDA submitted in the US by Lundbeck, and it follows the launch of Serdolect in Europe, South and Central America, Asia, and the Middle East."

There are also other
drug trials going on placing Serindole up against Risperdal,on healthy volunteers, and up against Zyprexa and Seroquel.

Serdolect vs. Seroquel. This trial is recruiting heavily in the U.S.and is sponsored by the drug company.

Am I missing something here other than sleep? Do both medications need to be used together? If that is the case, you still have the side effects of Clozaril.

I don't like the way the study is being conducted at all.

I have schizophrenia so it was nice to read something relating to it. I've tried Zyprexa and Geodon, they did not work for me, currently I am taking Abilify.

Valash ~ I worked with someone who was schizophrenic and tried the whole range of medications and combinations, but they were not effective. As a last resort, she is taking Clozaril and has been for years without any problems. As Stephany put it, it really is the last resort option. I hope Abilify works for you.

valash, thanks for reading here, and yes i agree with clueless, that i hope the abilify works for you, the meds are difficult and not always efficacious (my daughter has only responded to clozaril, she trialed everything else, and this drug still does not obviously cure it all, but it seems to help)

anyway, she battles with internal stimuli and she is also autistic.

some days, she can have a wave of psychosis flash back and forth in a few minutes, and be "back". she was in the psych ward for many months last year which in my opinion made her worse. she got out of there very sick physically (fragile) and now is doing fairly well. one thing ive observed w her is that it takes many months to recover from a big psychotic break.

i'm just happy she's here.

(the side effects of clozaril scare me to death that's for sure, I worry a lot).
