It's with much concern and complete disgust with the greed and unethical behavior and action by AstraZeneca's employees, that I link to this post at the mental health news blog, Furious Seasons, authored by Philip Dawdy.
My daughter was given all of the most popular antipsychotics while misdiagnosed with childhood bipolar disorder. She gained over 100lbs as a 11 yr old in junior high school as a result, and she was prescribed 200mg. of Seroquel at age 17,then 800mg. a few weeks later at age 18 in 2005--all inpatient psychiatrists dosed her up on these drugs.Needless to say, her young life as a teen was ruined, and the years lost can never be replaced.
AstraZeneca's Seroquel causes weight gain and diabetes, they are in federal court with these documents out for public viewing. There are more documents still concealed.
FROM the article, and one of the internal documents, at Furious Seasons:
"Dec. 6, 1999, email from John Tumas:
The larger issue is how do we face the outside world when they begin criticizing us for suppressing data."

Read your comment today about the psychiatrists who are advising people donate to FS. FYI: I did donate $60 to Philip and have been advising him for the past few months to start charging people to access his site, $5 a month as a baseline. And, when you think about it, I have donated to a site I am banned from, so I think this does show my investment to what he does. I still think the commentary threads do him more harm than good, not necessarily you as a factor, but some of the regulars have been ridiculous in some threads, perhaps calmer of late, but are some on vacation?
And, I do not make $180K a year, never have, and seriously doubt I ever will. Working in community mental health and still stuck having to rely on insurer's reimbursements, you think this helps me financially? I do not take pharma money and never will, so maybe the crowd needs to look at that portion to this income comment put out there.
My colleagues suck until proven otherwise, but, there are some who have proven otherwise.
Have a nice day.
therapyfirst
therapy first, great to hear you support Philip's work.
On another note, anything you've ever wanted to say as a professional about Seroquel, say it here, because ALL of my recent posts about the seroquel scandal are being read several times an hour by AstraZeneca (delaware, and europe)and Lilly, and Johnson and Johnson.
Do you still think antipsychotics are overprescribed like I do?
Do you still think Seroquel, an abused drug should be a controlled substance like I do?
Wayne MacFadden is being so widely searched for by Universities, and the pharma companies that something must be up with him today. Somehow, I feel no sympathy for the creep.
to respond this one time, as a clinical psychiatrist who is board recertified and has worked with as diverse a population any working psychiatrist could deal with, antipsychotics are overprescribed as a group and the proverbial crap is going to be slung around wide range as the fan continues to blow.
When my colleagues get over this insane notion that bipolar disorder is underdiagnosed and instead realize that anyone who complains of "mood swings" needs to be continuously monitored for months before concluding a serious diagnosis like bipolar, maybe then we will finally learn when to use medications like antipsychotics.
Until then, the next step to return reckless psychiatrists to reality is they themselves need to be dragged into court to justify their actions in the office. Unfortunately, I do not see responsible experts used in court testimony saying otherwise to what is the "alleged" standard of care these days, 'cause i bet the pharma reps call on these alleged experts too to corrupt their thinking.
Guess people need to keep touching the stove and burning assorted body parts before learning to heed the heat.
Any pharma rep reading this site, and still defends your company to the end, I liken your stance to the idiots who rode the Titanic to the end without heeding reasonable caution. May you drown and drag only yourself down with all your ill gotten booty!
That is the nice way to say go F yourself and your cronies!
Stephany,
I hope this makes sense, for the billionith time, I am sick-STILL. Horrible flu or something. Anyway, I just posted a very long conversation that I had with someone I went to high school with nearly 20 years ago. It's at my blog. He is now a sales rep for Wyeth and it was NOT a pleasant conversation. I can't remember the last time I was so ANGRY. Seroquel was discussed-he is convinced the drug is a miracle drug. Zyprexa too. As you know, I completely disagree. Seroquel is by far, one of the worst I've been on, Abilfy and then older antidepressants being next. Anyway, read it, tell me if it makes sense. It's all moot anyway and that was confirmed by "therapyfirst" !!! This guy I had the conversation with IS like the idiot riding the Titanic to the end. I loved that analogy by the way! Anyway, also, I must ask and I'm sure it's been mentioned here before-WHY IN THE WORLD are we prescribing anti-psychotics to those who are not psychotic??? It makes absolutely no sense. The FDA needs to get their s**t together, now!
much love to you!
