Shocking news: DSM-V task force member promotes ECT for pregnant women, Yale School of Medicine

WSJ blog is reporting in that ECT is safe treatment for pregnant women:

After all of the research and newsworthy buzz regarding Ray Sandford, the 50something gentleman who has been, for the last year receiving forced (against his choices)ECT as part of his out patient treatment plan, I was shocked to read that a woman, Dr. Kimberly Yonkers who is on the DSM-V task force (re-writing has turned to be a disaster) promotes the treatment in pregnant women.

Dr. Kimberly Yonkers from the Yale School of Medicine says:

" ECT happens to be one of the most effective treatments we have in our treatment armamentarium,” she said. “ECT is safe, it’s fast and it’s not contraindicated in pregnancy.”

But ECT suffers from the problem of public perception, says Yonkers.

“That is the real drawback.” Recipients also experience what is supposed to be short-term memory impairment, but which some patients say is much longer lasting than expected."

The drawback is negative public perception? that's it?

Dr.Yonkers discloses money received from:

Pfizer,Berlex, Wyeth,GSK, Shering,Eli Lilly,NARSAD

"Dr. Yonkers is an Associate Professor at the Yale School of Medicine where she directs the PMS and Perinatal Depression Research Program. She holds appointments in the Departments of Psychiatry (Primary), Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, and in the School of Epidemiology and Public Health."

Just my opinion, but i'd place bets she promotes the Mother's Act.
