Furious Seasons blog hosts the Internal documents Lilly did not want the public to see, ZYPREXA scandal.
Saturday, November 14, 2009 MindFreedom Radio guest is Jim Gottstein: (from the MindFreedom website)
"Jim Gottstein is a psychiatric survivor and Harvard Law School Graduate (1978). Since 2002, Jim has largely worked for free to support PsychRights efforts to stop forced psychiatric drugging, challenge psychiatric drug company fraud, and create humane alternatives in the mental health system.
Jim won international publicity by subpoenaing and then releasing thousands of documents about criminal fraud involving Eli Lilly and their psychiatric drug Zyprexa. Jim's courageous actions results in days of front page coverage in The New York Times, a NY Times editorial and a congressional investigation.
Jim has won several victories in front of the Alaska supreme court. He is now challenging psychiatric drugging of children and youth as Medicaid fraud.
On the show, Jim says he wants to be sure to cover psychiatric drugging of children and youth, especially in foster care. "That is the majority of Medicaid fraud," said Jim.
Jim also said it's important to talk about, "People's constitutional rights to be free of psychiatric imprisonment, euphemistically called involuntary commitment and forced drugging and electroshock. How are these rights ignored as a matter of course? What are strategies for combating it?"

My daughter was prescribed Zyprexa from 1999-2006. She suffered permanent body damage confirmed by specialists as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. There is currently a black box warning for use in women age 20 and under for Zyprexa. It was prescribed to my daughter at age 11 in 1999, and she exploded in weight gain within one year, she gained 100 pounds, and her eyes had crisis, she missed school the most from that drug, and when she chose to go off of it the summer of 2005 at age 17, she has never been the same since. Some thoughts are permanent psychosis, withdrawal psychosis, brain damage.

Zyprexa(this is my story alone) was the BEST for serious emergencies. But when I was prescribed it regularly I went home for the holidays and could not stop stretching and rocking back and forth on my Dad's living room floor.
I was convinced I could not live without it. A friend accused me of AP addiction. I told her it didn't exist(well yeah because my doc SAID SO) anyway my Dad intervened. I detoxed-and hard-and will never deal with zyprexa again.
Oh yes and between zyprexa and seroquel(which I am titrating from-the detox is incredible) I gained 60 pounds-in one year.
I believe people do not understand how dangerous this drug is. If people can wean from crack or alcohol or cigarettes but can't from AP's that should be a statewide huge red flag.
Again this is my opinion only.
I totally agree. I believe my daughter's brain became addicted to the drug, and the last 2.5mg was after she had carefully titrated down for 6 months was on that dose. most doctors would say that is a "nothing dose", but i saw her screaming, and ripping her hair out, begging me to drive her to the hospital.
i didn't want to. i told her to finish the withdrawal at home and at close to age 18, that was not her choice, hell she would have called a taxi.
that hospital, ended up doing a 11 med in 13 week drug bashing of her brain, where she seriously came away from that into where she is now, the adult psych system, and they bounced her from hosp to hosp, and horrifically, one slammed her down on 40, yes 40 mg of zyprexa, haldol, lithium, cogentin and a whopping 300mg of benedryl. on that cocktail she was the most psychotic i've ever seen her (and havent seen her that way again)ever.
who the hell knows, but i've definitely seen her suffer on this shit.
Oh...my...gosh. The stomach cramps, shaking, hot and cold, headaches, and the thoughts...oh my goodness the thoughts...add PMS or periods to this(I have endometriosis) and...
Many blessings to your daughter. When I get better...it is ON.
I have waged war with so many government/corporate factions that lol a few people do not like me. It started back with ritalin. To this day my family member is a speed freak. Because of course, his doctor knows best.
I don't want to go completely anti-psychiatry but...I am very close. I try to keep a middle ground of thought for those really suffering though I canceled my NAMI membership.
