Mental Health Blogger Creates a Seroquel Public Relations Nightmare for AstraZeneca

Sunday, May 2, 2010--Mental Health Blogger Creates a Seroquel Public Relations Nightmare for AstraZeneca

"Thanks to comment on a Pharmalot that was unrelated to its accompanying post, I stumbled onto an interesting story that puts some real sunshine on big pharma's PR machine. In this case, a blogger who writes about mental health issues and goes by the name of Stan was able to view the contents of a blog tracking database used by PR firm V-Fluence.

Stan posted some of the contents of this database on his blog, which showed that V-Fluence had been tracking blog posts related to AstraZeneca's anti-psychotic Seroquel. This drug has been a popular news topic since this past Tuesday's announcement that AstraZeneca agreed to pay a $520 million civil penalty as part of a settlement agreement with the US Department of Justice.

Some of the juicier bits uncovered by Stan were records about his blog, Is Something Not Quite Right With Stan - A Mental Health Blog, as well as a connection between company crisis coach Wayne L. Pines and AstraZeneca, which had been "amplified" (V-Fluence's euphemism for "being called out") by perennial pharma muckraker PharmaGossip.

I guess they've probably dug up all of our high school graduation pictures, too. ;-) I'm sure the file marked "Lisa" states - contrary ex-patient who got her life back once she got off all the psych meds. Counter attack: We'll call her a scientologist, even though she's just a sporadically attending sometime Methodist. Lol!

Seriously, though, this is quite creepy. I expect this sort of nonsense in politics not in medicine.
