Backs rights those ruled incompetent
"Earlier this month, a Norfolk probate judge declared a pregnant woman with schizophrenia incompetent and ordered her to undergo an abortion, stating she could be “coaxed, bribed, or even enticed’’ into the hospital for the procedure.
Unbidden, the judge further directed that the 32-year-old woman be sterilized “to avoid this painful situation from recurring in the future.’’
Yesterday, the state’s appeals court struck down the decision in unusually harsh terms, saying the woman had clearly expressed her opposition to abortion as a Catholic."

This is atrocious!
Thank goodness she had this taken to the Appeals Court. It is not a crime to have mental illness, nor should people be treated this way, it's eugenics!

Impeach the judge.
Of course, it's Massachusetts, so no judge would ever be impeached for making the State all powerful.
But I find the tone of the article very interesting. It takes a very neutral tone towards the original decision, and has a sympathetic quote from the appeals court judge ("hardest case he's seen"). The tone would be entirely different if it was about a mentally ill woman in Mississippi being forced to complete the pregnancy.
Then it would be shocked and appalled.
This has made me entirely cross, to the point of putting up an intemperate post tomorrow afternoon.
Sigh. It feels like we're always rolling the rock up hill, Stephany.
But upon sober reflection, I don't think the judge should be impeached. I think she should be horse whipped. And in a less degenerate age of the Republic, she would have been.
